A very bold step by DJB . While Floating Reed Bed can be helpful in particular stretches where sufficient land and flat topography is available , Najjaffgarh Drain and Yamuna River surely requires all technological interventions to make Dead Waters and Sewage as well as Industrial Effluent pollutants and Organic loads to be processed/ removed to allow only aerated and clear waters only to flow into Yamuna River...It is also too ambitious thinking to say that no STP shall be required..An integrated and all out approach without any reservations is required and expected from the world renowned Consultants..

While there can be no doubts that Floating Reed bed technology shall be as effective as it can be made to be; however, as Technocrats , we can not close our eyes to :

1. It needs typical terrain conditions and also larger area than many other technological options

2. It absolves Local Authorities from any civic responsibilities wrt (a) Minimising Disease Vectors (b) Escape of Methane and foul smelling gases to local environment , especially when air is stagnant (Delhi is not a coastal area with diurnal air currents)

3. It allows Generators of Sewage and Influents go scot free when almost half of the pollutants come over long distance from state of Haryana into Delhi

4. No special treatment for Heavy metals and detergents !

5. No emphasis on aeration when it is known that Yamuna water is dead (no oxygen)

6. Organic matters keep decomposing on their own also all along the nullah flows  across the three states viz. Haryana, Delhi and then U.P. where as Floating Reed Bed treatment is being planned only in Delhi stretch !

7. Pressure on Land is too much all along and open defecation , stray animals, wild life  all shall get a green cover and Delhi State Govt. and DJB can look the other way !

8. Sewage and Pollutants can not be prevented from entering the under ground waters bodies by sub-optimal solution....especially when one is facing such a bad scenario of accumulated negligence over last few decades....

The narrative of India can not afford to provide an efficient and hygienic Collection and transportation of Sewerage for treatment even for sub-urban clusters and Cities must end and there can not be an escape from STP to make sure that tertiary water fit for industrial / agricultural use is recovered.
