Ganga Clean-up Programm: Build and Operate the 140,000 m3/d Varanasi WWTPG VA TECH WABAG Ltd., India won an order for a value of around EUR 30 million for Design and Construction of 140,000 m3/d Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Dinapur, Varanasi including Operation and Maintenance for ten years. The scope for WABAG includes Design, Engineering, Supply, Installation, Testing and Commissioning of the Sewage Treatment Plant whereas the civil construction will be carried out by the JV partner. The order is part of JICA – Funded Ganga Action Plan Project and the implementation agency for this project is Ganga Pollution Prevention Unit of UP Jal Nigam, Varanasi. WABAG would employ the Activated Sludge Process with Biogas based Power Generation for this project. This process will help the plant to generate power from biogas and the plant would largely be self-sustainable using this “Green Energy”.  This will not only help the project to reduce its operational costs but will also reduce the carbon emissions and thus will qualify for carbon credits. Commenting on the development, Mr. S Natrajan, Head – Sales, WABAG India said “We are proud to be part of this Ganga Action Plan Project at Dinapur, Varanasi and this order once again demonstrates our proven capabilities in execution and operation of power neutral sewage treatment plants.”

  2. Dear All,

It is a wise move. That's it; in incoming sewage into Ganga should be treated first. Hopefully the same to be adapted in many other communities, surrounding this river. For sure one can make the river clean:

  3. its good to see that one more plant will be joining the others to handle the waste water allowing the treated water only to discharge in ganga river. But, My concept is little bit different, why we are not going with the decentralized based systems? We ate still moving on the same place? why we are not adopting the new systems? That will be much more effective in curbing this major issue and saving our rivers from poisonous water.

  4. A very pleasing news item. Hopefully, VA TECH WABAG Ltd., India considers other new technology, vis-a'-vis biogas route, such as the one discussed on the following links:
