Esta Van Heerden

About

Prof van Heerden is a Biochemist and she manages various aspects and implementation of projects.  She established the Screening Applications and Exploring Novelty in Extreme Environments Platform in 2007 at the UFS. She specializes in Extremophiles, Subsurface biogeochemistry and now (Bio)remediation.  She is an NRF (National Science Foundation)-rated scientist and registered at the Council for natural scientific professionals.  She has authored more than 70 accredited peer reviewed scientific publications, more than 200 posters and presentations and 7 patents. 

The efforts have developed from their fundamental research various pilot or bench scale demonstrations and they effectively partner with Geosyntec Consultants to showcase various options for industrial waste water treatments and green energy options.  Prof. Van Heerden has developed effective mine water treatment (bio)remediation options and focus on nitrate, arsenic, chromium, uranium and mine drainage treatment technologies.
