After succeeding in a very competitive international selection, "The United Nations University- Institute of Advanced Studies" (UNU-IAS) appointed me as "DIRECTOR" of  " Ishikawa International Cooperation Research Centre" (IICRC)  (2003- 2005, JAPAN); IICRC is a "Special Programme" from The UNU-IAS   (*).

 

(*) “The United Nations University- Institute of Advanced Studies is a strategic think tank for the UN and its Agencies” , and is fully involved in leading advanced scientific research, cooperation and policy oriented initiatives on sustainable development throughout ASIA and THE PACIFIC REGION.

 

"Ishikawa International Cooperation Research Centre" (IICRC) was created in November 1996 as an Institution for carrying out joint- international cooperation Research-Projects from The UNU-IAS, Ishikawa Prefectural Government, and Kanazawa City (Japan) . "IICRC aims to provide international and local inputs to UNU efforts on Sustainable Development at worldwide level, and the promotion of international academic and scientific cooperation in the Science, Culture and Policy" fields .

 

As IICRC’s Director I have re-directed the Centre’s international cooperation and research objectives to strongly focus on “Integrated Urban Solid Waste Management and Related Policy Issues” .

 

Other relevant fields of research and international scientific cooperation have included "Advanced Environmental Policy Issues, Multilateral Environmental Agreements  (MEAs) and International Environmental Law".

 

I have been also working and setting-up a new research project entitled "Upgrading Options for Urban Solid Waste Management and Policy Related Issues in Lower and Middle-Income Countries" , which was unanimously approved at the UNU-IAS' 11th Board Meeting held on June 2003.

 

* “PROJECT LEADER” (2003- 2005) of the Project entitled "Upgrading Options for Urban Solid Waste Management and Policy Related Issues in Lower and Middle-Income Countries", implemented as DIRECTOR of  "Ishikawa International Cooperation Research Centre" (IICRC)/"The United Nations University- Institute of Advanced Studies" (UNU-IAS), JAPAN.

 

PROJECT CO- LEADER (2003- 2005) of "Kanazawa University- The 21st Century- Center of Excellence (COE) Project on Environmental Monitoring and Prediction of Long and Short Term Dynamics of Pan-Japan Sea Area- Construction of a Monitoring Network and Assessment of Human Effects-", a major International Cooperation Research Project involving highly qualified Scientists from Japan, China, South Korea, Russia and Thailand. JAPAN.

 

Furthermore, I have been developing and setting up IICRC's Strategic Plan" , which is strongly focused on building up a "Network of Local and International Academics, Researchers and Experts with focus on Asia and the Pacific Region" .

 

The setting-up of this network is greatly encouraging international scientific cooperation initiatives, and providing strong inputs for organizing International Conferences/Seminars and Workshops.

 

I have held an excellent institutional, personal and academic relation with "Kanazawa University- The 21st Century- Center of Excellence’s (COE)” Project Leader, Prof. Dr. Kazuichi HAYAKAWA , as well as with other Professors, Senior Fellow Researchers and Members from the COE Project .

 

Scientific and Technical Cooperation- Partnership and Collaboration  with CITYNET- Regional Network of Local Authorities for the Management of Human Settlements in Asia and the Pacific Region- Yokohama Branch Office, Japan; The Institute of Policy Studies from Singapore; the United Nations Environment Program UNEP- IETC Urban Environmental Management Unit (Osaka and Shiga Offices, Japan) and ASEAN’s Bureau of Functional Cooperation (Environment), Jakarta, Indonesia.

 

Additionally, while working as IICRC's Director in Kanazawa, I have been a "Guest Professor" at The United Nations University- Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU- IAS),Kanazawa University, Ishikawa City College , and other well-established local Institutions, lecturing on " Contributions of the Pan-Japan Sea Area and Its Future; Sustainable Integrated Urban Solid Waste Management, and Global Environmental Issues" and related subjects.

 

It has been the greatest honor for my Academic, Scientific and Professional Career, having been part of “The UNU family” as Director of IICRC (2003- 2005) , which enabled me working during the period of mandate and under the Leadership of a World-Class Professor and Scientist , Prof. Dr. Hans J. A. van Ginkel- Rector of The United Nations University-, as well as Prof. Dr. A. H. ZAKRI, Director, The United Nations University- Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU- IAS); Prof. Dr. Itaru Yasui, Vice-Rector (Environment and Sustainable Development- ESD) of The United Nations University; Mr. Akihiko Watanabe, Associate Director (UNU-IAS), and Dr. William B. Chambers, Senior Academic Programme Officer (UNU-IAS), and Prof. Dr. Steve HALLS, Former Executive Director from UNEP- International Environmental Technology Centre (UNEP- IETC).

 

I am pleased of having had the opportunity of meeting many International Fellows, World-Class Scientists, Colleagues and Visiting Professors belonging to The UNU- Centre, The UNU- IAS, and The UNEP, with whom I shared several relevant International Academic and Scientific events and activities held throughout JAPAN, Asia and the Pacific Region .
