UNCSD welcomes survey covering around 1,100 km of Ganga with the objective to assess and study the distribution pattern and habitat suitability of Gangetic dolphins, smooth-coated otter, gharials, mugger, birds and smaller fauna such as turtles, snakes, lizards and frogs and aquatic invertebrates and of the Ganga river. The assessment would surely help in understanding which species of flora and fauna has evolved or adapted or failed to adapt to the pollution in Ganges over last few decades. It would also assist in restoration/ re-development of River Systems with its flood plains and water bodies to restore the ecological balance
