There is large scope of reduction in quantity of water required for agriculture, which accounts for 80% of water consumption. Additionally, sewage can be treated and reused to reduce demand of fresh water and water required for industry can be substantially reduced by recycling. The water thus spared for the river shall enrich aquatic life and strengthen ecology. Groundwater resources need particular attention to be recharged with rainwater. All these measures may offset the apprehended scarcity of water for several decades.
